There was a period when Graeme McDowell seldom worried about earning entry to golf's major championships.

From 2008 through 2016 he competed in 34 consecutive majors, a stretch highlighted by his 2010 US Open win at Pebble Beach.

Once ranked as high as world number four and a four-time Ryder Cup player, McDowell grew used to performing at the top level, yet this week's US Open at Shinnecock Hills is the 46-year-old's first major start in six years.

While delighted to return to the event that produced his finest moment, he sees the week as equally meaningful for his nine-year-old son Wills.

"I was unsure I would ever get to show him what it is like to play here while the sands of time keep running out," said McDowell from Northern Ireland.

"There is real gratitude for being back at a major now. These tournaments once felt routine, but when they are no longer guaranteed you understand how much you miss them and value every chance to compete on golf's biggest stages."
