Lexus had difficulty moving the original LFA, yet the V10-powered supercar built a devoted fan base and now stands as a favorite among enthusiasts. The badge returns on a completely new flagship performance car that drops the combustion engine. Previewed first by the Electrified Sport Concept and then by a follow-up show car, the upcoming LFA arrives next year as a full EV.

A camouflaged prototype appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, sharing the stage with the Toyota GR GT and the track-only GR GT3. The connection is clear: the new LFA shares much of its architecture with those models, though it leaves behind the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. It will ride on the same aluminum-heavy platform adapted for electric motors and a battery pack.

Lexus has shared few technical details but released the concept's dimensions. Measuring 184.6 inches long and 80.3 inches wide, the car is larger than the first LFA. It sits lower at 47 inches, and despite a 107.2-inch wheelbase it remains a strict two-seater.

The Lexus LFA's Design Will 'Express The Message'

Autocar spoke with Lexus designers at Goodwood. Lead stylist Shogo Kasamatsu explained that the look was shaped to convey a specific message rather than follow the brand's current design cues. The production car will stay close to the concept, differing only slightly. The team knows the electric LFA may prove difficult to sell, as affluent buyers still favor combustion engines and more traditional driving feel. Product general manager Yukihiro Yukita called weak demand in this segment the biggest hurdle, yet the car remains scheduled for a 2027 debut.

Lexus Wants To Deliver ICE-Like Thrills

Lexus aims to go beyond typical EV sound simulation. Engineers want drivers to sense they are operating with an engine, not merely by replaying a V10 recording but by creating an entirely new sound profile. The result should retain some character from the original car's Yamaha-tuned 4.8-liter V10 while staying true to electric power delivery.

The LFA badge is no longer tied exclusively to internal-combustion models. Lexus is open to using it on an EV that could feature solid-state battery technology, which would improve energy density and help limit overall weight. Even so, the car will be heavier than the first LFA's 3,262 pounds. Toyota targets under 3,858 pounds for the related GR GT, giving an idea of the scale involved.

Motor1's Take: Placing the LFA name on an electric supercar may feel controversial after the original's high-revving V10, yet the approach with solid-state batteries could reduce the usual EV weight penalty. Pricing will require care, since the first LFA already seemed costly. If the new model exceeds the GR GT in price, buyers may prefer the gas-powered Toyota. Still, added choice is welcome.
