I had not planned to travel by myself.

My 21-year-old daughter and I had arranged a getaway to the Turks and Caicos for a hotel's grand reopening. To increase the enjoyment we intended to recreate photos from past visits. I had even saved the old images on my phone.

The flight was reserved her bags were ready and then she discovered she had left her passport back in her New York City apartment. We were departing from Boston and explored options to retrieve it in time yet nothing worked.

I chose to proceed alone.

Making the decision

Because this was a grand opening altering the plans was not feasible. If the trip had not been linked to an event I likely would have postponed it.

I felt regret about leaving her behind particularly since she had looked forward to seeing updates at the resort she had visited since she was a year old.

Yet I remained eager for the journey down memory lane even without her company.

This is not the first time she has forgotten something

During high school I occasionally delivered her overlooked Chromebook water bottle or tennis equipment.

The pattern grew frequent enough that I wrote about it for The New York Times. Experts advised helping forgetful children build better habits rather than letting them face consequences alone.

She has made progress since then and after studying abroad in Rome she grasped the value of keeping a passport close. There she carried it daily like a driver's license.

I offered only one reminder to pack the passport but afterward I wondered whether additional prompts would have helped since I missed her presence on the trip.

Making the best of the situation

Among my family members my oldest daughter shares my greatest passion for travel. We have taken many journeys together so although I wished to share every detail I hesitated at first. I tested the waters upon arrival by offering a FaceTime view of the room.

She accepted and appeared interested yet I sensed her disappointment especially given how impressive the room was. After that I shared fewer updates.

I aimed to enjoy the stay fully. I followed through on the planned nostalgia photos capturing images at familiar spots around the resort.

Discussing the forgotten passport with strangers also proved useful for starting conversations. It made me more approachable and I soon heard many similar tales of overlooked or expired passports.

One woman recounted realizing her passport had expired only at the airport when the agent informed her. At least my daughter discovered the issue before departure. Her family also traveled without her which eased my guilt somewhat.

I spent time with other solo travelers I might not have met otherwise. I also tried activities such as a catamaran excursion that had not appealed to her beforehand.

By the end my guilt had faded and I looked forward to recounting the experience.

Tips for passport-related issues

Upon returning home my daughter remained upset about the oversight. I focused on prevention strategies. Given how common the problem appears sharing a few approaches seemed worthwhile.

For instance I advised her to check expiration dates regularly and link the habit to a recurring date such as her birthday or New Year's Day. Checking right after booking a trip can help though an expired document may require swift renewal.

I keep my own passport in one consistent location inside a dedicated travel pouch to avoid last-minute searches.

Having traveled with a passport since my twenties I still rely on bright yellow sticky notes placed on my desk before departures. Phone alerts can fail but notes remain reliable.

After sharing these ideas I told her that at only 21 she could be certain this mistake would not repeat.

She is now eager to plan the next journey and hopefully this time she will remember both her passport and her mother.
